  • Tobacco harvest to improve in Cuba in 2017

(28 Feb 2017) Cuban officials say this year's tobacco harvest will far surpass the last two years' yield, ending what had been a potentially disastrous shortfall in production at a time of soaring worldwide demand for the country's popular cigars. Soaking rains that came too early, followed by drought conditions essentially wiped out last year's crop, following on the heels of bad yields in the previous year. Growing tourism and rising demand for the country's cigars leaves Cuban farmers hard pressed to meet demand. And the weather hasn't always cooperated. This year, officials and farmers say, will prove to be a bumper crop of tobacco for the island, with yields from the country's tobacco plantations in the north showing healthy gains. Exports of Cuban stogies reached more than 430 ...

Learn the secrets of Australia's Top Organic Farmers. Organic farming is currently receiving a lot of attention. Many farmers are keen to give organics a go but are unsure about the process involved and it's viability. Our one hour video hopes to demystify organic farming by bringing together some of Australia's top commercial organic and non-toxic farmers, and ask them how they manage their enterprises without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Mark joined a tour led by Nuffield Farming Scholar Don MacFarlane which took in ten different properties including the Victorian Agricultural Research Centre. The great thing about the one hour video is that it allows the farmers involved to tell their own story on why they went organic, how they went about it and whether it has been a viable move. The video covers such diverse farming enterprises as organic cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs, grain, wine, fruit and vegetables. Some of the farms included in the video are: The Druce family farm "Green Grove" which produces it's own flour and confectionary at their Junee flourmill. Alan Druce has been organic since 1962 and the success they are having with their Green Grove Organics operation in Junee is a fine example to country towns everywhere of what can be done to bring life back into the country. The Statham Family property "Rosnay" near Canowindra which is setting up a grower-marketing group for organic wine, olives, potatoes and pastured poultry. The Statham's wish to form an organic farming community at Rosnay, with 20 acre blocks available for purchase. Nick and Fiona Chambers of 'Fernleigh Farms' near Daylesford, who farm organic vegetables, beef and grazing pigs. They have developed an export market to Japan. Fiona is a senior consultant with Rendell McGuckian Agricultural and Management Consultants and is involved in developing the organic dairy industry. The Johnson's of Wombat Wholefoods near Young show farmer's how even with limited acreage, non-toxic farming can be successful. Sam Johnson runs laying and meat chickens in movable pens, free range turkeys, pigs, cattle and fruit trees. Sam has an on property abattoir and direct markets his produce to consumers and restaurants. An amazing system whereby any waste from the abattoir is used to fertilize his fruit trees and any spoilt fruit is fed to his pigs. The Snowy Mountain Organic Dairy Farm near Cooryong. Stephen Whitstead was recently awarded Victorian Farmer of the year for his initiative in filling a niche market with low fat milk and cream. Weekly times Farmer of the year nominees Gerry and Terry Browning of Yarrawonga, who have had great success using organic principles to rotationally graze their 350 cow herd in a single mob. The video is full of good advice and good ideas. It is refreshing to hear farmers themselves talk passionately and succinctly about their operations. VVH-TV News Special Organic Farming: Can It Feed Us? Part 1 Karl Grossman Chief Investigative Reporter examines Organic Farming on Eastern Long Island. What is organic farming? Organic farming can be defined as an approach to agriculture where the aim is to create integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural production systems. Maximum reliance is placed on locally or farm-derived renewable resources and the management of self-regulating ecological and biological processes and interactions in order to provide acceptable levels of crop, livestock and human nutrition, protection from pests and diseases, and an appropriate return to the human and other resources employed. Reliance on external inputs, whether chemical or organic, is reduced as far as possible. In many European countries, organic agriculture is known as ecological agriculture, reflecting this reliance on ecosystem management rather than external inputs. The objective of sustainability lies at the heart of organic farming and is one of the major factors determining the acceptability or otherwise of specific production practices. The term 'sustainable' is used in its widest sense, to encompass not just conservation of non-renewable resources (soil, energy, minerals) but also issues of environmental, economic and social sustainability. The term 'organic' is best thought of as referring to the concept of the farm as an organism, in which all the component parts - the soil minerals, organic matter, micro-organisms, insects, plants, animals and humans - interact to create a coherent and stable whole. The key characteristics of organic farming include: protecting the long term fertility of soils by maintaining organic matter levels, encouraging soil biological activity, and careful mechanical intervention; providing crop nutrients indirectly using relatively insoluble nutrient sources which are made available to the plant by the action of soil micro-organisms; nitrogen self-sufficiency through the use of legumes and biological nitrogen fixation, as well as effective recycling of organic materials including crop residues and livestock manures; weed, disease and pest control relying primarily on crop rotations, natural predators, diversity, organic manuring, resistant varieties and limited (preferably minimal) thermal, biological and chemical intervention; the extensive management of livestock, paying full regard to their evolutionary adaptations, behavioural needs and animal welfare issues with respect to nutrition, housing, health, breeding and rearing; careful attention to the impact of the farming system on the wider environment and the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats. Wide shot workers and scientists walking outside near large breeding tanks LEAD IN : Cuba is famous for its coastline and beautiful sea. But concern about the island's ability to feed its population in the future has led to the authorities investing in developing aquaculture with freshwater species, to replace imported fish. STORYLINE: The "Mamposton Aquaculture Center", consisting of 17 hectares in San Jose de las Lajas (30 kilometres outside of Havana) is a centre of excellence for fish farming, especially the catfish and the tilapia. "Mamposton" produces 300 metric tons of fish yearly. Of the 26 fish farms on the island, it is the largest. Authorities are hoping to save millions of dollars by replacing costly imports with locally produced fish. So why cultivate freshwater fish in reservoirs and tanks when approximately 6-thousand kilometres (3728 miles) of coastline surround the island? It may seem paradoxical, but local authorities assured AP that it is all "part of a strategy". According to Julio Baisre, special assistant to the recently restructured Fisheries Ministry of Cuba, the Cuban coastline is rich in beauty but poor as a food source. The ocean's greatest fish reserves are limited to four specific zones: South America, southern Africa, the Mediterranean, and the coast of California. More than 50% of the world's catch comes from those specific areas that amount to only 1% of the world's bodies of water. According to the last official numbers available from 2008, the volume of capture in Cuba for the year was 60,900 metric tons of fish (both freshwater and saltwater) and seafood (lobster and shrimp). In addition another 30,500 tons, came from freshwater fish farms. Cuba buys 30,000 additional tons on the international market to satisfy the country's needs. Authorities indicated that in 2007 Cuba spent 48-million U.S. dollars importing fish mostly destined for sale in the locally subsidised market. According to a recent report from the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation, F.A.O., Cuba lacks "sufficient infrastructure and qualified personnel" to work towards the promotion of aquaculture in the future. Cuba exports 81-million U.S. dollars in fish products, primarily lobster and shrimp. The island cultivates 3.6 tons of farmed shrimp destined for Europe. Exports of Cuban stogies reached more than 430 million US dollars per year in 2016, with demand increasing both nationally and worldwide. Cruise ship tourists, US visitors and others are snapping up boxes of cigars in stores around the country. Distributors abroad are reporting record sales, making cigar sales an important source of foreign revenue for the cash-strapped government. The lush green fields in Pinar del Rio Province, some 140 kilometers (86.9 miles) north of Havana, are carpeted with healthy tobacco plants. One cooperative foreman says his workers have harvested 3 or four times what they were able to bring in last year. The drying sheds are full of tobacco leaves, waiting for the moment when they are transformed into hard currency for the country, a welcome development for Cuba's ailing economy.
